Where Are The Good Men?

Mon, 04/01/2013 - 09:51 — Thabo Mokete

There is a problem today of weak leadership in South Africa, as well as many other countries in Africa. In this I have a gripe especially with us men. We will avoid pointing fingers at any specific organization, whether religious, business or political. We will make the point that good leadership stands out, regardless of the organization in which it is found. We have here a situation where we are led not by good men!

Shame and Grace Part 14 - The Open Conversation

Tue, 02/26/2013 - 07:10 — Thabo Mokete

When either guilt or insecurity is not dealt with, it tends to create an environment of shameful secrets, where lying becomes necessary. It is the power of acceptance that makes it possible to stop the lying and embrace the healing that is needed.
Denial makes life seem bearable for one who carries on a private shame. It helps to cover up the 'terrible thing' so one can carry on living, keeping private things private, so to speak.

Shame and Grace Part 13 - The Sweet Deal Of Acceptance

If we hope to strike a deal with the problem of human insecurity, we will have to start at the beginning. Unconditional acceptance.

Shame and Grace Part 12 - The Question Of Insecurity

Wed, 01/30/2013 - 19:03 — Thabo Mokete

It is never an option whether we should feel insecure or not. For as we live and breathe, an event will come that prevents us from affirming who we are essentially. What are we to do when that moment comes?

Shame and Grace Part 11 - The Nearness of God

Thu, 12/20/2012 - 06:49 — Thabo Mokete

There is a solution to the main problem in our existence. There is an answer to each and every question. But these will not be handed out on a plate. God works in our situation through the enabling and illumination of the human will as we live and breathe.

God's response to our questions is not to send answers by telephone or by email. He does not announce them on the television news. Neither does He print out a manual on how to get things right. Nor does he send a magical resolution to our anxieties and leave us to be spectators in life.

Shame and Grace Part 10 - The Encounter With Grace

Fri, 12/14/2012 - 07:42 — Thabo Mokete

While grace points to the mystery of a divine gift toward human beings, it is not magic. It is a real encounter where God meets man, right at the point where the person is, at the point of his or her need.

Shame and Grace Part 9 - The State of Things

Tue, 11/20/2012 - 06:56 — Thabo Mokete

The conflict of wanting to do good but ending up with bad is not something we could reconcile for ourselves. What can bring an end to the ongoing war between our moral thinking and our instincts?1

Shame and Grace Part 8 - The Real Guilt

Tue, 10/09/2012 - 06:24 — Thabo Mokete

The basis of real guilt is to be aware of a law, and to be estranged from it. It is to know the ideal, but not be able to access it. It also comes as the realization that one falls short of the standard of well-being.

Suppose there exists a perfect human will, which we will call the perfectly oriented will. Perfectly oriented in that it is rightly connected to its source , the divine will. Is there a need to write a law for such a will?  It lives the divine will. It coincides with divine will. There is no law, only love and harmony.

Shame and Grace Part 7 - Beyond Shadows of Guilt

Wed, 09/05/2012 - 06:36 — Thabo Mokete

Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.(NRSV)1

The problem of guilt has been a frustrating puzzle for centuries. But for that longest time we have only dealt with tokens of guilt. By grace we may now get beyond these shadows and work with the reality.

Problems With Guilt

There are some formidable challenges that make guilt a difficult area to navigate even for the best among us. We can look at a few examples here:

While You Were Still Sleeping

Thu, 08/09/2012 - 08:11 — Thabo Mokete

Here's to appreciating the love that meets us everywhere we go...

While you were still sleeping,
Wrapped up warmly in your blankets;
I was busy watering the grass, and filling up the rivers.
I thought you'd like that
When you open up the tap in the morning.
Did you?

While you were still sleeping,
I brought out flowers and vegetables from the ground;
You thought it was your garden;
But it was all my work.
So when you step into that garden in the morning
Give me a smile, if you like that.

As you were still sleeping,
