The Meaning Of Pain

Tue, 03/20/2012 - 07:34 — Thabo Mokete

There is something about the truth: It remains the truth even if no one is ready to believe it. Still, there is a price to be paid for bargaining with the truth. Therein lies the source of all emotional pain.

The truth simply expresses reality, but we often find ourselves dressing it up with stories and clever disguises. Behind all the stories we have created about ourselves is the sweet, beautiful truth, just waiting to be known1. What a joy it is to find a truth about oneself that was hidden by a clever, painful story!

Let Them Go Free - Part 2

Tue, 02/28/2012 - 06:56 — Thabo Mokete

It's A Mirror: They Go Free, You Go Free

Now and then somebody says 'forgive yourself, and move on...' How is this possible? Can anyone truly bestow the gift of forgiveness on himself or herself. Can you really let yourself off the hook from the judge within you?

The Meaning Of Forgiveness

There may have been a time when we thought of forgiveness as a favour that we did for someone. And maybe we still do. It has now become clear however, that the favour of forgiveness goes all around. The forgiving person is healed as much, if not more than the forgiven.

The act of forgiveness begins with the awareness that one has been wronged. That there is a person, perhaps a group of people who have done the wrong. There is a crime, there is a guilty party, forgiveness must take place.

The Courage Of A Rosebush

Tue, 01/31/2012 - 07:49 — Thabo Mokete

The goal of life is not that our situation must change, but that we must create a beautiful world in spite of circumstances being the way they are.

It was so wonderful to see the array of peach coloured roses from all different stages of growth in my uncle's rose garden. The red ones too, they were so beautiful that it just brought a smile from out of nowhere.

The Trouble With Leaving - Part 2

Tue, 01/24/2012 - 07:42 — Thabo Mokete

There is a way in which we leave our own selves when other people leave us. When someone we hold dear leaves, there is often a big temptation to follow him or her, at least mentally, sometimes emotionally.

In the story of the two sons1 we referred to in Part 1, found in Luke 15 of the Bible,  it seems to me that at the end the father welcomed back home two sons. We know for sure that the younger son left, but when we look more closely, we find that the older son must have left too, because both had not been available for a meaningful father and son relationship.

The Trouble With Leaving - Part 1

Tue, 01/17/2012 - 11:35 — Thabo Mokete

Sooner or later one has to leave. And I'm not making any judgments as to whether it is right or wrong the reason for which you left. But how did you walk out? Did you not drop something very important behind?

Someone I know very well once went overseas for a business conference that was scheduled for two and half days. He would be coming back on the morning of the fourth day. Then faithfully, on the afternoon when the conference ended with a party, he left the town to visit a big city nearby for the night. He would spend the night there before taking off by the plane in the morning.

The Secret Dance With The King's Daughter

Tue, 01/10/2012 - 06:16 — Thabo Mokete

(from the “Healing Proposal”)

It is almost dark in the room, with only a flicker of light from a candle on the table. Bheki is sitting patiently by Kouku's bedside. "Now K-man, how long are you going to go on like this? Don't die on me now man". Kouku's eyes are closed but his mouth moves lazily "My friend, I must tell you the truth, in case I die, then you can tell my family. It's stupid I know, but it's like this..."

Time Heals Not

Tue, 12/13/2011 - 07:58 — Thabo Mokete

(from: 'The Healing Proposal')

Someone probably meant well in saying that time is a healer. However, this can be the most  disabling idea when we believe it to mean we should leave injuries unattended. For whatever is left unresolved is neatly rolled up in time as memory, and creates a permanent victim in the soul.

The place from which one is weakest is also the same point from which one is strongest. The human condition is such that these polar streams exist throughout the life of a human being.
